Introduction
Hypertension is a predisposing factor for cerebrovascular, cardiovascular accidents such as stroke or renal complications. The mushroom Polyporus umbellatus, known in China as “Zhu-ling�was already considered by the treaty “Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing�(The Divine Farmer’s Materia Medica), as an excellent diuretic and used in both edema (in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) = humidity) and urinary system diseases. At present, clinical trials have demonstrated its effectiveness not only for these diseases but also for more serious cases of pyelonephritis, nephritis and kidney stones.
